I am a psychiatrist and full professor at Amsterdam UMC (Vrije Universiteit), embedded within the research institute Amsterdam Neuroscience. I graduated in 2005 with highest distinction on a PhD thesis based on brain imaging (both MRI and PET) studies in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related anxiety disorders. Since 2008, together with Ysbrand van der Werf, we have built the research section Neuropsychiatry, embedded within the department of Anatomy & Neurosciences, in close collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, focused on both translational research in obsessive compulsive and related disorders and cognition and neuropsychiatry in Parkinson’s disease. Our studies range from experimental studies on emotion, cognition, and sleep to human brain imaging studies and (non-pharmacological) clinical trials. Since 2013, I lead (co-chair: Dr. Dan Stein) the ENIGMA-OCD working group, within the ENIGMA consortium, a worldwide initiative to perform imaging and imaging-genetics meta- and mega-analyses. As part of ENIGMA, I am working with imaging colleagues from around the world to standardize the processing and analysis of MRI data. In 2018 we started a multi-center imaging study in OCD across the world (NIMH R01 grant, PI: Blair Simpson, I lead the imaging work package), harmonizing clinical and imaging protocols to establish brain signatures of OCD phenotypes. I am visiting professor at the Bergen Center for Brain Plasticity, focusing on the neural effects of intensive exposure therapy in OCD and related disorders. Thanks to the personal NWO-ZonMw VIDI grant (2018-2022), I lead a project on lifespan vulnerability and plasticity in OCD, including a clinical trial combining rTMS and exposure therapy in treatment-resistant OCD patients. Financed by the ‘veelbelovende zorg’ grant by Zorginstituut Nederland, I lead the multi-center study TMS for Exposure Therapy Resistant OCD (TETRO) (2021-2027), in close collaboration with colleagues in Nijmegen (Radboudumc/ProPersona), Maastricht (Maastricht UMC/Mondriaan), and Den Haag/Groningen (neuroCare groep).
Since 2008 I started a clinic for neuropsychiatric disorders in Parkinson’s disease, in strong collaboration with the Department of Neurology. Within the broad field of neuropsychiatric disturbances in Parkinson’s disease, my main interest concerns the impulse control disorders, anxiety and mood disorders. We run multiple clinical trials on the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for neuropsychiatric disturbances in Parkinson, e.g. using light therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, online cognitive training, and physical training.
