Neuroscience of disordered Emotion and Cognition on the cutting edge between Neurology and Psychiatry
We study brain circuits involved in neuropsychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders to bridge the gap between fundamental research and clinical applications, using state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques and novel and experimental interventions.
Mission statement
Embedded within an unique collaboration between the preclinical department of Anatomy & Neurosciences and the clinical departments of Psychiatry and Neurology, we study disorders of emotion, cognition and behavior. We aim to intervene in these pathophysiological entities using experimental (brain stimulation) or therapeutic (bright light/psychotherapy/medication) means. Through strong local and (inter)national collaborations we study, both in humans and animals, the interactions between emotion, cognition and behavior, the developmental aspects (across life span and various stages of disease) and fundamental properties of targeted interventions. The team stimulates growth and development of individual scientists in a dynamic research/teaching environment. We have strong ties with patient organisations and place high value in outreach activities.
Vision
The ultimate goal is bringing results of fundamental neuroscience to daily clinical practice by developing innovative treatments, and to use the stories of the patients in creating new ideas on pathophysiology. In this way, we hope to make informed choices about applications and to contribute to the bridge between neuroscience, clinic and society
